MANDATE
The project entailed creating a music poster that would bring the sounds and feelings of the music to life. It is advertising an upcoming performance of Landfall. The project was also adapted into a vinyl jacket, sleeve and sticker.
Experience the whirlwind of complex emotions of Laurie Anderson’s album Landfall.
Laurie Anderson is an experimental musician, composer, filmmaker, installation artist, poet, photographer and more. Laurie talks about a lot of relevant and real content in her work such as Landfall. Landfall is an album composed of 39 songs and discusses the disaster of Hurricane Sandy in New York and the impact it had on her emotionally. This album which is performed with the Kronos Quartet takes you on a journey of feelings of vulnerability, fear, and uncertainty with an eerie tone.

The goal I wanted to achieve with this project was to capture the idea of a storm and how it directly compares to the way emotions can feel like a hurricane. As well as, realizing the weight of importance that it had when encompassing the layers of the tragedy Anderson explored.
The process began with listening to the album on repeat so I could understand the textures that the songs had. This was especially important since some of the songs explored an intensity while others had a calmness or had an electronic sound to them. What became apparent to me was the importance of the sequence of the songs and the way they interacted and led to one another. Once I came to that realization, I knew the idea of interaction, layering and movement between elements needed to be included in the poster. I explored many mediums and forms through mark making, photography and vector. The idea that stuck was mark-making that had a personal feel and a lot of fast-paced movement with the contrast of layering simple vector shapes. As well, the typography needed to have a lot of textured in it like how Anderson represented her experience in the album.
The adaptation of the vinyl needed to feel continuous with some of the same conventions while introducing surprising twists like how Anderson’s album has many different styles of sound in it. This was done through the cropping of the texture and inverting of the type colour.
The project was very exciting because there was a lot of personal feeling of being very hands-on with the work. As well, for this project, it was very important to step away from the computer to be able to create a very connected design. This way of looking at a project was very interesting to me and has helped me in the ways I have explored other projects.
