MANDATE

The project entailed creating a conceptual and clear publication design for Dawson’s Graphic Design Handbook.

Layout of multiple spreads from the publication on a black background.

APPROACH

The project entailed creating a conceptual and clear publication design for Dawson’s Graphic Design Handbook.

I took the perspective of mixing the idea of how people first see graphic design as digital in contrast to the hands-on and sometimes organic work that goes into design.

The project began with sketching various concepts, and this one stuck. For this project, the progression and interaction between using digital elements, like pixels, bit type and raster images in comparison with organic mark-making that I did throughout my various semesters in the program was how I approached the visual spreads.

As for the layout and type choice, I wanted it to feel very clean to contrast with the boldness of the visuals.

Lastly, to bring colour into the booklet, pages were printed on coloured paper to act as an element of surprise.

Open spread of publication. Left page green with black typography. Right page is white with black typography and black rectangles. Black wire-o binding down the centre.

OUTCOME

Working with contrasting elements was a really fun experiment that pushed the creative conceptual thinking of the project. It came out as a successful way to represent the content of Graphic Design at Dawson College.
